Issu de la mouvance du free jazz, il a joué longtemps aux côtés de John Tchicai et a parcouru les Centres Culturels en
Afrique Noire et au Maghreb en jouant dans la plupart des festivals africains et notamment avec Fela Kuti.
Michel Fernandez a enregistré de nombreux albums pour les labels indépendants. Il est récompensé "Talent Jazz Actuel" sélection officielle du Festival Jazz à Vienne en 2005.
